Remember him
Duas for Ali Banat
He gave everything he had. The best thing we can give him now is our dua.
Remembering Ali Banat in dua
Ali Banat gave away what he owned so that others could have what they needed. What we can give him now is our dua. In the funeral prayer, the Prophet ﷺ asked for the one who had died in these words, which Awf ibn Malik memorised from him (Sahih Muslim 963):
You can sponsor an orphan and see each month’s support.
Allahummaghfir lahu warhamh
O Allah, forgive him and have mercy on him, keep him safe and pardon him. Make his welcome generous and his place of entry wide. Wash him with water, snow and hail, and clean him of his sins as white cloth is cleaned of dirt. Give him in exchange a better home, a better family and a better spouse than those he had. Bring him into Paradise, and save him from the torment of the grave [and the torment of the Fire].
Said in the funeral prayer. For a woman, “lahu” (for him) becomes “laha” (for her).
For all who have gone before us
This dua, also said in the funeral prayer, asks for the living and the dead together. Say it for him, and for everyone you have lost:
Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina
Allahummaghfir lihayyina wa mayyitina, wa shahidina wa gha’ibina, wa saghirina wa kabirina, wa dhakarina wa unthana. Allahumma man ahyaytahu minna fa-ahyihi ‘alal-islam, wa man tawaffaytahu minna fatawaffahu ‘alal-iman.
O Allah, forgive those of us who are alive and those who have died, those who are here and those who are not, the young and the old among us, our men and our women. O Allah, whoever of us You keep alive, let him live by Islam, and whoever of us You take, let him die with faith. O Allah, do not deny us the reward for him, and do not let us go astray after him.
For those who came before us
The Quran teaches the believers to pray for those who came before them in faith (Quran 59:10):
Walladhina ja’u min ba‘dihim yaquluna rabbanaghfir lana wa li-ikhwaninal-ladhina sabaquna bil-imani wa la taj‘al fi qulubina ghillan lilladhina amanu, rabbana innaka ra’ufun rahim.
And those who came after them say: “Our Lord, forgive us and our brothers who went before us in faith, and leave no ill feeling in our hearts towards those who believe. Our Lord, You are Most Kind, Most Merciful.”
The charity that carries on
The Prophet ﷺ said that when a person dies, their deeds come to an end except for three: a charity that carries on, knowledge that benefits others, and a righteous child who prays for them (Sahih Muslim 1631). Ali Banat set up Muslims Around the World so that his good deeds could continue after his death (The National, 1 June 2018).
